"Greg, someone called
today to ask if I knew anything about your
classes. I told her our son Caleb had attended
your Anatomy and Physiology Camp a few years
ago. He loved it so much, he raised his own
money to attend the advanced camp and as a
biologist, I thought it was absolutely
outstanding myself. I told her I highly
recommend Landry Academy!"

Camp Biology (1 Year of Biology Labs in 1
Week)
Dates: June 2 - 8, 2013
Leader: Jodi Quint
Description:
Biology is the study of LIFE! This
course (camp) will endeavor to enlarge the student's field of
vision through the exercise of observation and significant
cognitive sweat from the learner. Scientific inquiry combined
with hands-on lab experiences will excite and challenge the
student through out the week. Labs and activities are designed
to 'train the brain' of the learner so that students develop an
understanding and ability to think and act like a scientist.
Multifaceted activities that involve making observations and
planning investigations will capture and motivate students to be
eager and primed to learn about the marvelous mysteries of LIFE.
inquiry (exercises in scientific method, i.e.
observation, hypothesizing, graphing, skepticism etc.) will
occur in the morning and investigation (diffusion/osmosis,
cellular respiration, dissections-arthropods, invertebrate,
vertebrate etc.)will be made in the afternoon. One of the
benefits of a week-long camp is being able to perform
experiments that require several days of data gathering. There
are no prerequisites for this camp.

Camp Chemistry (1 Year of Chemistry Labs in 1 Week)
Dates: June 9 - 15, 2013
Leader: Matt Mizesko
Description: We'll perform the labs typically covered in a
year-long high school chemistry class.
Chemistry is the study of matter and energy and the interactions
between them. Whether you realize it or not, chemistry is
happening all around you, every day: on your stove top, in your
furnace, even in your body. Everything you can touch or taste or
smell is a chemical and anywhere there is matter and energy
there is chemistry at work. Understanding chemistry will help
you understand the world around you better.
Camp Chemistry takes a hands-on approach
to teaching students about the world around them and will cover
most material seen in a High School chemistry lab including
matter and energy, atomic structure, the Periodic Table,
molarity, chemical bonding, chemical reactions, solubility,
phase changes and acid/base chemistry. Some of the labs we will
be doing include Hollow Pennies, Making Gold, Eating Iron,
Acid/Base Reactions and Solubility Comparisons. There are no
prerequisites for this camp.
Camp Mock Trial / Pre-Law
Dates: June 9 - 15, 2013
Leader: Attorney Leslee Dirnberger
Description: Campers will spend the
week exploring the intricacies of the trial world as they become
orators ready to take on the Supreme Court!
They will learn to speak with confidence
and poise as we debate important National issues such as gun
control and religion in public schools.
While participating in mock trials
students will learn about opening statements, direct and cross
examination, objections, admitting evidence, closing arguments
and jury selection.
Students will work with witnesses and
co-counsel as they determine their best strategy for a
successful outcome.
We will
also explore trials as portrayed in film and literature as we
shed light on what REALLY happens in the courtroom.
There are no prerequisites for this camp.Camp Psychology
Dates: June 9 - 15, 2013
Leader: Daniel Smith
Description:
This camp is designed for students that want to learn more about
themselves, the field of psychology, and the social interactions
that shape and define us.
Best of all, all of the concepts
we are covering will be taught and studied through a Christian
worldview.
It is amazing to see how much God is
involved in psychology, if we will simply open our eyes and let
Him in!
This camp is perfect for students who
have an interest in psychology, or just those that want to
prepare for college and the social science courses they will
encounter there.
This camp will be very active, engaging,
hands-on, and promises to make you think!
I currently teach full-time at a North
Carolina community college, part-time at a university, and
part-time at Landry Academy, but I have also had nine years of
high school experience; I want to help bridge the gap between
high school and college.
The
primary focus of the week will be on:
*Psychological methods, as students
will create their own hypotheses and then use an experimental
approach to test them
*Psychological disorders and
treatment methods, as we use a clinical, DSM-based approach to
understand the world of abnormal psychology
*What creates and shapes our
personality, as we will explore (and take) personality tests and
inventories, while analyzing each of them
*Social psychology, as we research
and design our own studies to see the impact others have on our
lives
*Motivation and what truly drives
our decision-making
There are no prerequisites for
this camp.

Camp CSI (Crime Scene
Investigation)
Dates: June 16 - 22, 2013
Leader: Greg Jones
Description:
Crime scene is all about the
physical evidence and physical evidence takes center stage at
Camp CSI !! The objective of this camp is to give students a
realistic, activity filled, fun learning experience with genuine
insight into the reality of investigating the crime scene.
During our week long adventure together, we’ll take a close look
at the dynamics of scene investigation and examination as seen
through the investigator’s eyes as we unravel the mysteries of
processing the crime scene.
Our learning plan is built on a balanced
approach
between crime scene slideshow to understand theory and concepts,
tabletop exercises to introduce a variety of physical evidence
types and equipment, and lots of hands on workshops and field
exercises to perfect our new learned skills.
Topics
of discovery and activity include: writing search warrants,
crime scene security, mechanics of crime scene processing,
reconstruction, photography, scene sketching & measuring,
dynamics of physical evidence, footwear, blood, hair & fibers,
fingerprints, gunshot, glass, tool marks, robbery investigation,
death investigation, homicide investigation, and how the medical
examiner, the crime laboratory, and the state’s attorney’s
office all work together in a criminal case.
Photography is an element in the documentation/collection
process. For the best experience -
Please bring a digital
camera (either a DSLR or point & shoot), recharging
equipment, 2GB or larger memory card, and camera operation
manual. Also, please wear gym shoes to classes (we’ll use them !).
There are no
prerequisites for this camp.
Camp Physics (1 Year of Physics Labs in 1 Week)

Description: Fun physics taught from a
Christian worldview. State of the art technology in educational
lab equipment is used including electronic motion, voltage &
current sensors, and a photogate to capture measurements
directly in their computers for analysis. Bringing a computer is
strongly recommended since students are instructed in the use of
Microsoft Excel (recommended, but OpenOffice Calc can be used)
for data analysis, graphing and the use of trend lines which
entails how basic algebra is useful in the laboratory. This
course intensive covers advanced high school physics concepts
made accessible to the average science student. A common comment
is, “Boy, I really learned a lot!"

Camp Computer Game Programming
Dates: June 16 - 22, 2013
Leader: Joseph Hall
Description: Students will collaborate in the design
and implementation of a video game. From whiteboard sketch
to computer screen, they will learn how to create the
simple, easy-to-understand components of a game, and how
those simpler parts combine to make a more-complex whole.
They will learn about the tools that game developers use to
create games, and how to prioritize and trim their initial
design to meet a looming deadline.
Working as a team, the students will create a working game
from their concept, and demonstrate that game to the other
campers at the end of the week. Towards the end of the week,
students will participate in "lab time", where they are
encouraged to identify and implement changes to the class
game to put their own personal touches on the project. This
helps ensure that the students understand the material that
was covered well enough to venture out on their own.
While there are no prerequisites for this camp, each student
MUST bring their own laptop which runs some version of
Windows (XP/Vista/7). A MacBook may be used, but it will
need to have a copy of Windows running in a virtual machine
(e.g. Parallels or VMWare) or BootCamp. All course materials
and requisite software will be provided.
